Pok Gai Dev Diaries: Which Game Engine Is the Real MVP for Us Juk Sing Gamers?
Unity, Unreal, or DIY? A Hong Kong-American Pok Gai’s Take on What Game Designers, Marketers, and Gamers Need to Know Before They PK Their Wallets
Yo, fellow pok gai and wannabe Genshin whales—welcome to Pokgaigamer.com, where we spill the tea (and sometimes the milk tea) on all things gaming, straight from the perspective of your favorite 1.5-gen/2nd-gen American Cantonese toxic gamer. Today, we’re diving into the most heated debate since your mom caught you spending $500 on skins: Should you use Unreal Engine 5, Unity, something else, or just go full si futt lou and build your own engine from scratch?
The Engine Showdown: Who’s the Real Ying?
Let’s be real—every pok gai game dev has asked this: “Which engine is the most PK?” Here’s what you need to know, whether you’re building the next mobile gacha scam or a AAA console flex.
Indie Devs: The Sup Sup Soi Path
Unity is basically the instant noodles of game engines. Cheap, fast, and everyone’s used it. If you want to get your game out there before your parents start nagging about a “real job,” Unity’s your best bet. C# is easy, asset store is stacked, and you can go from zero to Steam release faster than you can say “sing leh!”.
Unreal Engine 5 is for the “I’m not like other indies” crowd. You want those big boy graphics? You want to flex Nanite and Lumen even though your laptop sounds like it’s about to pok gai? Go for it. Blueprints are great if you’re allergic to code, but the learning curve is chi sin.
Custom Engine? Bro, unless you’re Elon Musk’s illegitimate child with unlimited time and money, don’t even. You’ll end up eating lemons (sik ling mung) and crying into your instant noodles.
Mobile Devs: Gacha or Gotcha?
Unity is king. Every mobile game that’s not a bootleg is probably made with Unity. Cross-platform, easy ads integration, and your gacha mechanics will run smoother than your uncle’s mahjong hustle.
Unreal Engine 5 is for when you want your mobile game to look so good, your phone battery dies in 10 minutes. Not worth unless you’re making the next Honkai: Star Rail.
Other engines like Cocos2d? Maybe if you’re making Flappy Bird clones. Otherwise, stick with Unity.
PC & Console Devs: The Big League PK
Unreal Engine 5 is the go-to if you want your game to look like a Netflix show and maybe get roasted by Digital Foundry. AAA visuals, massive worlds, and every influencer will call your game “ambitious” before they ask for a review code.
Unity still works for PC and console, especially if you’re not trying to melt GPUs.
Custom Engine is only for studios with more money than sense. You’ll spend more time debugging than actually making the game.
What Can Game Designers, Marketers, and Gamers Learn From This?
Designers: Don’t chi sin—pick the engine that lets you actually finish your game, not just flex on Twitter. Unless you want to be a pok gai forever, focus on gameplay, not just graphics.
Marketers: Know your engine, know your market. Unity for mobile? Easy. Unreal for console? Flex those visuals. Don’t oversell what your engine can’t do, or gamers will call you out faster than a Hong Kong auntie at a fish market.
Gamers & Influencers: Stop gatekeeping engines. Nobody cares if your favorite game was made in Unity or Unreal—unless it crashes more than your uncle’s van. What matters is if it’s fun, not if it’s “AAA” or “indie darling.”
